Why was a revamp needed?

Context

Clients wanted what the market didn't have

The Market Simulator is a tool originally developed by the Advanced Analytics team in Dig Insights for select Upsiide clients, allowing them to test new products against existing market conditions.

Based on user demand, Upsiide identified an opportunity to make this functionality accessible to all users through a more intuitive and user-friendly interface. This initiative resulted in the creation of a tool that had no equivalent in the market.

Approach

Conversations and lots of iteration

I began by collaborating with the Advanced Analytics team, who developed the original tool, to understand its functionality and identify interface challenges that needed to be addressed.

Next, I engaged with the Customer Success team to gain insights into clients’ goals with the Market Simulator and to learn the strengths and limitations of the original code-based tool on its separate platform.

This research informed the design of an optimal user flow, which guided the creation of initial wireframes. I then developed multiple design iterations, presenting them to my manager, stakeholders, and the engineering team to gather feedback and refine the tool into its final iteration.

The solution

How does it work

Things are better in pairs

The final designs offered users two approaches to test their innovations: one focused on optimizing the client’s product portfolio, while the other enabled users to define innovations more precisely by interacting with cards to add or remove products within the virtual market.

Step 1

Initial flow: Optimize your product portfolio

Once survey data collection is complete, users are prompted to opt into the Market Simulator. While the simulation processes, a loading screen communicates progress. When ready, users receive an email invitation to access the report, where they can interact with the simulator—comparing outcomes by toggling products in and out of the virtual market.

Step 2

Selection flow: Prep your market

Users can introduce 'innovations' by selecting existing market products, with unselected items designated as innovations. The simulator then launches, showing existing products with market share while innovations start inactive, reflecting a real-market scenario.

Step 3

The main course: The virtual market

The full Market Simulator shows how innovations impact existing products, with market share adjusting based on audience preferences from a card swipe exercise. Key interface elements, such as the summary box and easy-edit buttons, help users quickly understand and modify their selections.

Interactions

Grouping products

Allows users to add products in exclusive groups that would sum up their share of the market and see how they are affected by different changes in the market (adding and removing products).

Interactions

Hover interations

Micro interactions were an important part of the whole market simulator experience to make it easy to add and remove products.

Interactions

Tooltips

A tooltip was introduced to make it easy to see product cards and read results; in an effort to cater for extreme cases where results at a glance could be hard.

Handoff & closing notes

After finalizing designs with the Product Manager and Staff Engineer, I presented the Market Simulator designs to developers, detailing expected behaviors, interactions, and user flows.

During development, I collaborated with the Marketing and Customer Success teams to plan a campaign promoting Upsiide’s newest innovation. Toward the end of the cycle, I supported the QA team in testing the UI and UX to ensure success metrics were met.

Following the product launch, we received overwhelmingly positive feedback from key clients and confirmed that users could achieve their desired results. Post-launch, we continued iterating on the designs to enhance usability and interactivity.

In December 2023, the Market Simulator was patented as an innovative market research tool."
