Why do we need a dashboard revamp?

Context

Outdated experience

Upsiide offers multiple interfaces that deliver distinct experiences to users, with the Create Dashboard serving as the starting point for curating surveys and initiating their market research journey on the platform.

Since its initial launch in 2020, the dashboard has not undergone significant updates, leaving many of its UI elements and interactions outdated. Feedback from some of the platform’s most active users has highlighted a clear need for a redesign.

Approach

Conversations and lots of iteration

I conducted a series of user interviews with internal users and the Customer Success team to gather insights into the challenges they faced when creating surveys with the old dashboard, as well as their expectations for improvements. I synthesized these findings into a set of considerations and must-haves, which I reviewed with my manager and key stakeholders. This process enabled us to define clear project requirements and align on timelines and constraints. With this foundation established, I began exploring and developing design concepts to guide the dashboard revamp.

The solution

First update

Reworking the logic experience

Logic is a survey creation feature that enables users to define rules based on respondents’ answers throughout the survey. In its previous form, the experience was complex, limited in the number of rules it supported, and restricted to being attached to individual questions.

To address these challenges, the UI was redesigned to follow a logic tree structure—an approach validated through conversations with researchers as being more intuitive and effective for organizing thought processes. Beyond the visual redesign, enhanced flexibility and functionality were prioritized, including fully customizable routes and support for more complex rules.

Delivering this update required more than a UI/UX refresh; it necessitated the development of a completely new component within a different type of dashboard.

Second update

Keeping the experience consistent

Previously, the dashboard used infinite scroll, allowing users to view all of their questions on a single screen. However, with the introduction of the more complex logic component, this approach was no longer sufficient.

To support the independence of the logic component while maintaining a consistent experience, all survey components within the dashboard were separated. This shift introduced a new workflow in which users edit surveys one question at a time. Although initially driven by the complexity of logic, this change was well-received by internal users.

However, a new challenge emerged: with survey components now separated, how should this structure be effectively represented within the sidebar navigation?

Third update

A new navigation

The sidebar got a big refresh, giving it a modern look and enhancing all the interactions. That included:

  • Adding the ability to create groups of questions

  • Changing the way users can add survey components

  • Showing how logic is being applied

  • Updating the hover and active states

  • Indicating incomplete components

With the sidebar refresh, all of the survey components were updated to a new UI

Results

This project was structured across six sprints. After securing approval from my manager and stakeholders, I presented the new designs to the engineering team during Sprint 1. By Sprint 2, we began testing core functionalities with internal users to gather feedback and evaluate whether success metrics were being met.

In Sprint 3, I incorporated actionable feedback into updated designs and collaborated with engineering to ensure feasibility. By Sprint 4, I conducted QA reviews, providing detailed feedback to developers. Finally, in Sprint 6, we prepared for launch, during which I contributed by adding new components to the design system and refining existing ones.

The update was very well received. Users appreciated the refreshed UI, but more importantly, they were enthusiastic about the enhanced logic component, which significantly simplified and accelerated the process of setting up complex surveys, increasing productivity by 15% as reported by some users.
